I AM writing to thank all those voters who supported Stephen Lathrope in the General Election, and helped Labour in the Beaconsfield constituency to achieve a swing away from the Conservatives, and a lead over the Liberal Democrats.
Clearly, most people were not deceived by the deliberately misleading statement made in the Liberal Democrat manifesto. They claimed that "in the last election in the Beaconsfield constituency, Liberal Democrats polled over three times the Labour vote".
There is no doubt that this was an attempt to make voters think that this statement related to the last General Election, when it fact it related to a local by-election in one ward held earlier this year. The true position in the last General Election was that the Liberal Democrat Party and the Labour Party were almost neck and neck.
Admittedly, the statement made in the Liberal Democrat manifesto was qualified by a minute asterisk that was linked with an even more minute explanation, but it is clear that the statement was intended to deceive.
We received a number of calls from voters surprised and angered at this use of small print on election materials.
If Charles Kennedy is setting out to be Mr Clean, then it's time that he cleaned up the Lib Dems in the Beaconsfield constituency otherwise they will continue to be known as the "Fib Dems."
