A UNION official has deplored a Government decision designed to limit the number of claims which come before industrial tribunals.
But the move has been welcomed by an organisation representing the employers.
The changes include:
An increase in cost penalties which can be awarded against a party who brings an unreasonable or vexatious case from £500 to £10,000.
Powers for tribunals to strike out ill-founded claims with no chance of success.
A rise in the deposit needed for pursuing a weak case from £150 to £500.
Frank Strode, chief executive of Thames Valley Chamber of Commerce & Industry, said: "These changes will be welcomed by small businesses in particular. Valuable employer time is taken up with spurious claims."
"In the past the chamber has been critical of the previous system."
Derek Addison, regional organiser of the GMB Union, said: "The GMB deplores this decision. Individuals should have the right to take their claim to a tribunal with union support, without the worry of having to pay costs."
