Sussex has been issued an amber be prepared weather warning for wind today.
The Met Office upgraded its warning in the early hours of the morning from a yellow be aware warning.
Its website now says :"Initially, southern and southwestern counties of England are likely to see southerly gales with gusts of 60-70 mph, perhaps 80 mph on the south coast for a brief period."
The warning starts at 10am and lasts until just before midnight tonight.
Brighton and Hove City Council has issued a warning to people to stay away from the beach today.
It says: "The seafront team are advising people to stay well away from the water's edge and to be extra vigilant of young children, holding their hands and keeping dogs on leads. Even on a calm day, steep drops on the beach, sea currents, undertow or a sudden change in weather can create life threatening hazards without warning."
It has also warned all its streetcleaning staff to avoid the area, and says pebbles will be removed from the promenade once the bad weather has passed.

And Brighton and Hove CityClean closed its refuse site in Wilson Avenue because of high winds:

Yellow warnings are still in place for the rest of the week, for wind on Thursday, and both rain and wind on Friday and Saturday.
