THE Brighton Christmas Day swim is a tradition stretching back decades – as today’s first photo from our archive proves.

The scene, thought to be from Christmas Day 1953, is not dissimilar to those we see at Yuletide in the 21st century.

The four chaps pictured look full of festive joy as they toast the season in their tight swimming shorts.

The sea looks remarkably calm given the time of year but the drink is no doubt helping to keep them warm.

Do you recognise any of the four? Perhaps you can spot a grandad or uncle among them?

Another scene that would not look out of place today is from Bognor Birdman in 1985.

The man’s creation looks every bit as hazardous as those we see in Worthing today. And by the looks of it, the distance he achieved is similar too. But who is the daring flyer? Let us know.

We love this photograph of staff outside Butlins holiday park in Bognor in 1985.

The team look ready to say hi-de-hi to campers and tourists, but who are they?

This fantastic shot of smartly dressed schoolchildren crossing Ditchling Road in 1953 speaks of the time.

The school uniform – all high socks, hats and scarves – look like something out of Just William.

And what about the crossing lady’s uniform? It certainly looks different from what you would find today.

By the look of the trees, it is winter. And we are told it is Ditchling Road.

However, there are no names on the caption.

Do you know who the youngsters are? Perhaps your mother or grandmother is the crossing lady.
