THE year is 1935 – a time when Britain was attempting to haul itself out of the Great Depression.

In a bid to do so it would have looked to build and increase its manufacturing and exports.

Perhaps the scene in the main picture was part of the process – but what is it?

There are people moving it in some way and a large tractor-type lorry just out of shot, so clearly it’s a heavy piece of kit.

And where is this taking place? The building in the background has a sign saying Hudson’s South of England Household Furniture. Does this give us a clue?

The year 1935 was also one of the final years of peace before the Second World War.

Is the parade weaving its way through town a Naval group being kept in shape for the worst-case scenario? Admittedly the war was four years away but there were already grumblings coming out of Germany.

Can you shed any light on this picture? Out of shot to the right is an ornate shop front with “Jack Adams” written above the window. It could be a dockyard or a town centre. Where?

Not everyone was getting their hands dirty. Two other pictures on this page show worthy religious figures visiting a school. Who are they? And which school are they visiting?

Elsewhere, the pen-pushers were working like the rest – but what meeting is this? It is difficult to make out the coat of arms on one of the high-backed chairs in shot but it could be a council meeting or governmental gathering. Either way, it’s somewhere in Sussex because it is in our archive.

For some it was a life of leisure – so who are these women at a party or function in their finest garbs?

And finally, to partner these ladies of society, does anybody know who this man is? His style certainly sums up the spirit of the times.
