IN 1957 South Vietnam was attacked by Viet Cong Guerrillas, 150,000 people died in the Asian Flu epidemic and the Soviet Union launched the first space satellite Sputnik 1.

It goes without saying these were major events with ramifications worldwide.

Yet the underlying social context of the 50s is not evident in our selection of photos, which display people just having a really good time.

That said, perhaps the group of musical youngsters sought to emulate chart-topper Little Richard, who was all over the airwaves at that time.

They’re going about it in a stylish way – their band name The Vultures could pass as a rock group now, let alone back in the 50s.

Perhaps the cool cats in the photo, left, with the records and turntable were spinning a Little Richard record, or his counterpart Buddy Holly or, of course, Elvis.

In 1955 rock and roll has its first number one hit when Bill Haley’s Rock Around The Clock topped the chart.

The man at the forefront of the shot is dressed like a classic rocker with suit and tie.

Elsewhere, a woman is having a merry ride on a carousel, the attraction that is as popular now as it was then.

The fairground is the site of another of these pictures, which shows one man helping another with his flamboyant costume. It’s good to see people getting into the carnival spirit.

We have no idea why a smartly dressed man and woman are taking a ride on a hydraulic crane.

Who are these people and what is the motivation for the unusual activity?
