POST offices might not be the most glamorous places but they’re full of intrigue.

We all rely on the postal service but very few of us really know what goes on behind the scenes.

These photos, following on from yesterday’s snaps of enthusiastic workers sorting through letters, give us an insight to the inner workings of the mail business.

Unlike yesterday, we know the location of at least one of these pictures; our archive tells us it is Church Road Post Office in Portslade.

The shot was taken in 1989. Were you a regular visitor? Is the building still standing?

More recently, post offices were under threat in Sussex.

In 2004 The Argus revealed that 53 post offices across Sussex had been lined up for closure in a huge cost-cutting scheme.

That year saw the demise of the shop at 120 Church Road, Hove, after the owner of the next-door pizza restaurant reclaimed the premises. Saied Abdulkhani held the freehold for the main post office and wanted the premises back.

Sub-postmistress Mary Hodgson, who had run the shop for nine years, found she was unable to renew her lease or find alternative, affordable premises in Church Road.

She said she told Post Office Counters in 2003 she was likely to lose the outlet but had all but given up on finding somewhere else.

Miss Hodgson told The Argus: “It’s very disappointing.

“I flagged it up a year ago but it’s only in the last couple of weeks that anything seems to be happening.

“They were talking about having a mobile post office which they could have outside Hove Town Hall.

“I’ve spent the last year checking Church Road for alternative premises but just can’t find anywhere else that’s large enough and affordable.

Miss Hodgson estimated she would have to almost double her annual rent of about £20,000 to get another lease.

She said: “Church Road has become highly desirable, which has pushed the rents too high.”
