TODAY we look back at a well-known motorist – and some of the taxis that have been driven around the city’s roads over the years.

Lionel Starley was the owner of the Starley’s Garage, which is still open today in Hythe Road, Brighton.

As a family deeply involved in motor sports, the Starleys got involved in racing cars at Firle hill and other local hill climb and sprint races, as well as in Goodwood.

We believe the family have also been involved in motoring events in France, Holland and Guernsey – perhaps readers can tell us more.

Lionel is pictured with his wife Pauline and is also shown holding a trophy he won at a motoring event.

Lionel Noel Starley was born in 1917 to John Milton Starley and Beatrice Mary Starley. He married Pauline in 1965.

Lionel died in 2003, aged 85.

Various old photographs of taxis and their drivers can also be seen throughout the years.

The unified scheme for Brighton and Hove taxis was conjured up before the two towns were joined into one city.

The major taxi ranks in the city are now in East Street in The Lanes, at The Level, at Brunswick Place in Hove, and at both main railway stations.

The taxi rank outside Hanningtons store in East Street is pictured in 1986.

Streamline Taxis has been operating in the city since 1936.

The founders of the taxi co-operative and the Streamline Taxis concept helped it spread across England, reaching Blackpool, York, Plymouth and Bristol.

Brighton and Hove Radio Cabs has been serving the transport needs of the community since 1964.

Taxi driver Reg Betts is pictured launching a campaign at Queen’s Park Secondary School, Brighton, in 1965.

If you remember what the campaign was in aid of, please get in touch.

Perhaps you are one of the children pictured alongside Mr Betts and would like to update us about the photograph.
