ACTORS and actresses have been frequent visitors to Brighton over the years.

Since the 1800s the city has been known as a cosmopolitan, gregarious place to visit, with many arriving for a celebratory weekend or to launch their latest film or greet fans.

Though she lived and made her career mostly in the States, Hermione Gingold features in our Timeout spread today, shown during a visit in 1969 when she appeared on the West Pier.

Born in 1897, she would have been 72 at this stage, though the sharp-tongued, eccentric persona she was known for still rang true – eveident by her choice of clothing in our pictures here.

After a successful career as a child actress, she later established herself on the stage as an adult, playing in comedy, drama and experimental theatre, and broadcasting on the radio.

She gained popularity in revue, which she played from the 1930s to the 1950s, co-starring several times with Hermione Baddeley.

Sadly, an accident ended her performing career in 1977. She died a decade later.

Lockwood West and his son Timothy also appear in our pages today, a little later in time in 1987.

Born in Cheshire, he made his stage debut in 1926 as Lieutenant Allen in Alf’s Button at the Hippodrome Theatre in Margate, Kent.

His London stage debut was as Henry Bevan in The Barretts of Wimpole Street at the Queen’s Theatre in 1931, his television and film appearances mainly taking part later in life from the 1960s.

Timothy West enjoyed more than 50 years of varied work in the business, starring in theatre, television and film productions like his father.

Now 83, he has been married to Prunella Scales (television’s Sybil Fawlty) since 1963.
