Michael Inkpin-Leissner is penning utter hogwash when he talks about people’s attitude to Caroline Lucas (letters July 10), basing his arguments on a flawed opinion poll not even about the MP, her constituency or the general election which was held almost a year ago – a long time in politics.

The more recent tests of public opinion tell a very different story, with a poll by Lord Ashcroft showing Greens and Labour neck-and-neck in Brighton Pavilion.

(This despite the poll being skewed by initially asking whether people would vote Conservative, Labour, LibDem, Ukip or ‘other’ –- not naming the Greens in a Green-held constituency!) And the bookies’ odds are also showing the two neck-and-neck.

Meanwhile, the European elections in May put the Greens in the lead in Brighton Pavilion.

On that basis, people are far from what Mr Inkpin-Leissner describes and instead are firmly embracing Caroline Lucas’s excellent record as a constituency MP and national Green figurehead.

Perhaps it’s Labour’s constant carping from the sidelines, unsupported by even a glimmer of a coherent policy of their own, that is turning people off.
