It is understandable that the artistic director of South East Dance welcomes the Dance Space building on the Circus Street site (Argus September 13) even though there is no lift so it will not be accessible for disabled people.

I assume that the University of Brighton also welcomes their 6/7 storey new library building.

I am sure that a bank is delighted with the lucrative 450 student rooms in four buildings: ranging from six to 13 storeys on a site which is not designated for tall buildings (more than six storeys).

But it is necessary to look at this development as a whole, cramped as it is on to a one hectare site (less than the size of a football pitch).

As a representative of the developer Cathedral Group has stated: “We have got to get a lot of value out of the site”.

Regrettably in that they have been successful, but at the same time damaging the Valley Gardens Conservation Area and making life for the residents of the Milner Flats intolerable with the noise from 450 student rooms.

Of course the city council is recommending approval as they are joint developers of the site with the Cathedral Group.

They are judge and jury on their own case and in the process they have torn up their own tall buildings policy.
