Road building plans for the A27 are certainly not the ‘game changer’ described to the roads minister during his visit to Sussex last week (Argus, October 17), but just more of the same and a dreadful waste of money.
We’ve been building roads for decades now, with the promise that it will solve congestion – and has it?
We’re as clogged with traffic as ever and just pouring good money after bad as study after study shows that building road capacity just gets more people into their cars to fill the space.
At a time of austerity, when health professionals fear the obesity time bomb because we’re not walking and cycling when we could, when businesses complain about the pressure for costly parking space taken up by cars driven just a mile or two and emissions are changing the climate, isn’t it time to really change the game and use money more prudently on better public transport, cycle routes and business travel planning schemes that work?
