When I first started attending Brighton and Hove Trades Council, the president was a dynamic lecturer in his mid-thirties called Andy Durr, pictured above. He chaired big, potentially fractious meetings firmly and fairly.
Andy was a technician/craftsman at Brighton Polytechnic. Each year the Trades Council presents a traditional Miners’ Lamp (donated to us by Kent NUM) to someone who has made an important contribution to the movement. Andy made the plinth on which it sits.
He also made an earlier version of the Trades Council banner. He went on to become a lecturer, with a particular interest in the history of local working people and socialists, including the Brighton Cooperators and The Battle of Lewes Road during the 1926 General Strike.
He was a prime mover in the establishment of the Brighton Fishing Museum, and a life-member of the Trades Council.
