The suggestion by Bob Brown to build a simple chord line between Arundel to enable trains to run directly to Brighton off the Arun Valley Line to facilitate through running is most interesting (Argus, January 31).

This might also be seen as a welcome means of easing the pressure on the London to Brighton Line, which is and has been for many years, a great concern.

I believe The Argus carried a news item quite recently to the effect the Network Rail or Southern had no plans in this regard on the grounds of cost.

I can also remember this subject being discussed in The Argus some years ago, with a similar response from the railway authorities.

On that occasion, I contributed a letter pointing out that scheme was flawed for at least two reasons. Firstly, the west coast line can scarcely carry more services within the existing timetables.

Secondly, there are only three platforms at Brighton Station that can service west coastway trains and one of these can only accept short trains and is also used by London bound services.

It is an interesting proposition, but I cannot see it happening in the near future.
