NEWS that an end to the bin workers’ pay row could soon be in sight is most welcome.

The disagreement between Brighton and Hove City Council and Cityclean workers has dragged on for too long.

While refuse workers deserve a fair deal, it is the wider tax-paying public who suffer.

Details of the improved offer from the council to the GMB union have not yet been revealed but it is promising to hear officials are willing to work towards bringing the dispute to an end.

Some might say bin workers’ are paid enough already or that there are many people in a variety of jobs who haven’t seen pay increases in years.

Others suggest refuse workers are entitled to be paid as much as colleagues who do similar jobs.

Whatever your view, what is important to remember is that residents just want the bins collecting.

Discrepancies in pay are not the fault of the residents of Brighton and Hove.

They should not be punished.
