Has Labour given up on Brighton Pavilion? As Labour heavyweights came down to support their candidates in the marginal seats of Hove and Brighton Kemptown, former Hove MP, Ivor Caplin says Purna Sen, their candidate in Brighton Pavilion, “felt a bit left out” (Argus 15th April).

Ed Miliband’s wife, Justine, took the opportunity to be photographed in front of Hove’s beach huts alongside Labour candidate, Peter Kyle and, only after “rival candidates” in-fighting did she make a token visit to the Palace Pier.

Meanwhile, Ed Balls was dressed in a striped apron “kneading the dough” for his “bake-off” photo op with Kemptown candidate, Nancy Platts. Again, no Purna Sen. And last week, Owen Jones, columnist and prominent Labour supporter, at an event organised in support of Nancy Platts, pointedly commented, “Caroline (Lucas) has been an amazing, inspiring, campaigning MP. And I think people across politics would agree. She’s made a huge difference in Parliament.”

Has Labour thrown in the towel in Pavilion to concentrate on more winnable seats? Indeed, maybe Ed Miliband would actually quite like Caroline Lucas to be re-elected, as she, along with the SNP, could help to push Labour in the more progressive direction that so many in his party would prefer.
