KATY Rice wrote an extremely interesting article in The Argus on the subject of moral bullying (Argus May 19th). She mentioned both charity and political bullying but there is a third type which is best described as emotional bullying.

This manifests itself in the seemingly endless broadcasting of television charity appeals, many of which contain a request along the lines of “Just £5 will pay for…”, Just £10 will pay for…” and so on.

Many people do not realise that by sending off the small amount initially requested, they will almost certainly receive a flood of phone calls asking for either an increase in a standing order, if one has been set up, or even more donations than the one that they initially agreed to.

The £5/£10 ploy is there simply to hook the unwary. Many of these ads are nothing more than emotional blackmail and bullying.

Surely the time has come when the regulatory authorities take a long, hard look at what these charities are doing.

Charity begins at home, they say, but that does not mean that our homes have to be swamped with misleading charity advertisements.
