I am responding to the letter from Richard Szypulski in The Argus (June 8).

It isn’t sour grapes to be disappointed that we have a Government that was elected by a statistical fluke, by the eccentricity of a failed voting system.

Is it wrong to expect a Government that has a mandate to govern – this one doesn’t. I am sad to say this but I expect riots and strikes and civil unrest before the next election because we have a party in power now who are arrogant, who have no respect for anyone but their own and who govern for the people who voted for them.

My real problem comes with the comment that the British people rejected a change in the voting system.

I feel the British people are fair and most realise our current system is an abject failure. However, very few people have even the slightest interest in voting systems and how they operate.

During the campaign the Conservative Party, with Cameron taking a leading role, used a disgusting campaign of lies, deceit and smears to vilify alternative vote or any other system.

The Tories’ main objection was under the current system they are guaranteed to govern every few years. Under a fair system that would go and we would get a government that reflected voter opinion.

To the Conservative Party the most important thing is themselves, whatever gets them elected.

They also have most of the tabloid press on their side. The Labour party was split and totally abdicated any responsibility and took almost no part in the campaign.

The Liberal Democrats ran a totally incompetent campaign to vote yes. They totally failed to get across the benefits of an alternative vote.

Mr Szypulski proves the points I am making as he states that the electorate rejected the single transferable vote and proportional representation.

What was rejected was the alternative vote which isn’t a proportional system. He states a proportional system would produce permanent coalitions but that is not necessarily true.

The votes reflect what is the will of the people and the current system doesn’t.
