It is completely unnecessary to add fluoride to water just because children are eating too many sugary foods and drinks (The Argus, April 17).

This will not solve the problem and will only add other health problems. Each person is different and can suffer adverse effects through taking in this artificial form of fluoride - it occurs naturally in small amounts in drinking water.

Adding fluoride to our water can cause retardation in children, mottling in teeth and skeletal flourosis.

It can also have an adverse effect on the thyroid gland, which is responsible for many important functions in the body.

Adding fluoride would be mass medication and, as such, is illegal.

This smacks of nannyism by the state and I suspect someone is going to make huge sums from it.

It shouldn't be forced on to those of us who look after our teeth and limit foods that cause tooth decay.
