IN 1985, the World Bank stated “Libraries are crucial” (Argus Letters, Nov 6).
“Literacy has an extremely powerful role in determining a population’s level of mortality”
As author Martina Cole suggests on (“I wish I’d gone to university...”, The Argus, Nov 6), literacy also has an extremely powerful role in determining a prison population.
“One of the most shocking things to me when I first visited a prison was the number of young men who cannot read or write. And I think that is one reason why a lot of them are there.”
