During election time the people of Lewes put up lots of Liberal Democrat posters supporting Norman Baker. It is a Lewes tradition, a bit like the bunting at street parties, or all those window decorations at Christmas.
My household didn’t put posters up this election, not because we had any bad feeling towards Norman Baker, but just because we did not get round to it, and lots of other people did it anyway. It was not a tradition that was in any way under threat.
Normally the posters stay up in the windows for a few weeks after the election and Lewes is generally proud to have elected a Liberal Democrat MP.
Some vote Lib Dem because they want Norman as their MP, some because they want to see a Liberal Democrat government and some because they simply do not want a Conservative government.
But has anybody noticed how quickly the Norman Baker posters disappeared from the windows of Lewes after this election?
I think we are all very angry. I certainly am. I remember my grandfather saying “The only way to get a Labour government is to vote Labour” back in the 1970s.
While I know Norman Baker is a great constituency MP and would happily vote for him, I do not intend to vote for his party ever again.
