He may not have the stature of a matinee idol but George Osborne is the darling of theatre bosses up and down the land after announcing a major tax break for the industry in Brighton yesterday.

The move is set to save production companies thousands of pounds and see more quality touring productions coming to our area.

It certainly was a much needed boost for the industry which has been hard hit in the times of austerity where local government and Arts Council funding has been significantly reined in.

Understandably beancounters have been prioritising frontline services but often the benefits of the arts may be lost in the rigid maths of a calculator.

The history of our country is wrapped up in our theatres, not just in the buildings themselves, but in the stories they tell.

Now hopefully with this new tax relief, even more people will be star struck by a night at the theatre.
