When Sir Robert Peel founded the modern police force in 1829, he said its first purpose should be the prevention of crime.

While we often hear when police crack a big case, how well they prevent crime is naturally much harder to gauge.

However, a new inspection report shines some light on this area in Sussex Police and makes for mixed reading.

Inspectors said the force lacked an overarching strategy and not all staff had crime prevention training, but noted some good initiatives.

Sussex Police said things had moved on since inspectors visited all forces between January and April this year and measures were already in place to tackle any outstanding gaps.

For the sake of staff who deserve the best possible training, and all the victims of crime who might never have been, we hope Sussex Police are the best.
