It is fantastic to hear the Royal Pavilion Estate has been successful in securing £5.8million of funding.

The cash is much needed in order to help secure the future of the fantastic site for many generations to come.

Not many cities can lay claim to having a royal palace in their centre and we must never forget how lucky we are.

However, it is not cheap to maintain historic buildings such as this. Not only does the estate include the Pavilion but also the extensive grounds and various other buildings including the Dome and Corn Exchange.

But while this cash will go a long way to kick-starting the redevelopment plans, there is a lot more work to come.

It has previously been estimated it will cost £35million to implement the masterplan. And as with many of these things, the estimate often ends up being lower than the final cost.

The decision makers at the Royal Estate must keep up the good work and ensure they raise the rest of the money as soon as possible.

Be it through further grants, lottery funding, personal donations or fundraising activities, all efforts must go into securing the cash.

The Royal Estate is too special an attraction to not protect.

We must ensure it stands as a city icon for centuries to come.
