IT IS a shame police officers have to step up patrols to help protect victims of domestic violence during the festive season.

For a time of the year that is supposed to be about love, giving and community, too many people are forced to live in fear.

As people face increased financial pressures, drink in excess and spend more time in each other’s pockets some people unforgivably lash out.

These people must, as at every other time of year, be dealt with to the full extent of the law.

But it is also not just about punishment, the victims on the receiving end of this violence must be cared for and supported.

The work Sussex Police are doing in conjunction with local domestic violence charities will hopefully protect those who need it and punish those who deserve it.

This is an issue so many people in Sussex face every day and often suffer in silence.

Hopefully this time of year we can all come together to support the work of the police and the amazing efforts of our invaluable charities.

And most of all be there for those who call for help.
