IT is surprising so few people seem to know about the free NHS 111 helpline which can offer help and guidance at any time of the day or night.

It is especially important at this time of year, when services are under increased pressure, that people are aware of where they need to go to ensure they get the right treatment in the quickest time.

It seems there is still a lot of work to do to raise awareness of services such as at the walk-in centre near Brighton Station, the wide range of help that pharmacists can give and out-of-hours GP services.

The NHS 111 system is not perfect, and there have been teething issues in the past, but it is still a good first point of call for people not sure of where they need to go.

It is hoped more people try out the free service as this should lead to fewer people visiting the already overstretched A&E department at the Royal Sussex County Hospital so it can easily deal with the urgent and life-threatening cases.
