WE ARE backing the calls of a dog rescue centre to think twice before buying a pet at Christmas.

Too often we hear of horror stories about poorly pets who have been bought on a whim, only to end up abandoned on the doorstep of an unwitting charity or individual.

To put it simply, it’s not fair. Why should an animal suffer for the sake of poor planning and preparation on behalf of slap-dash owners? They shouldn’t.

We reported last week about how Brighton and Hove City Council is one of the first authorities in the country to adopt a new education system for people to look at before buying animals in pet shops. The EMODE system tells potential owners how much time, effort and money they’ll need to commit before buying animals.

We advise anyone thinking of buying an animal for Christmas to take note of such advice first.
