THIS week's tragedy at Camber is still sinking in.

For the families of the five young men, it is a tragedy they will carry with them for the rest of their lives.

If one good thing has come from this awful week it is that lifeguards will now be stationed at the beach - at least until the end of this summer.

To be honest it is difficult to believe why they were not there already.

Camber Sands has to be one of the busiest beaches in the country on a warm day.

Being in driving distance from London, it is also a popular spot for daytrippers from the capital.

Those who come from London tend not to be as knowledgeable about the dangers of the sea and can get in trouble even in mild conditions.

There it would seems obvious that Camber especially should have permanent lifeguards patrolling the beach.

For the families and friends of the five it is all too late.

But hopefully their deaths will prevent many others in the future.

Of course, there will be a cost to placing lifeguards on the beach.

But if just one young life is saved in the future then it will be money well spent.

The other positive that will hopefully come from this tragedy is an increased awareness of sea safety.

Over this Bank Holiday weekend thousands will take to the Sussex coast with the weather set fair.

This tragic story will be in the minds of many and will hopefully act to educate and prompt increased safety.

The sea is there for us all to enjoy.

But it is not a swimming pool.

We must respect it.
