THE events of Tuesday night have been horrific for all who witnessed them and the family of the poor man killed in the collision in the centre of Brighton.

As we headed to our new Argus offices in Manchester Street we all saw the police tape and the investigations.

What our reporters found when they went out to speak to peoplewas a community full of grief for the 78-year-old, who we are only naming in our story today as John.

For the record we do know his full name as residents around St James’s Street told us, but we decided not to print it as some family members may still not know about the tragedy.

The people around St James’s Street and Kemp Town could not believe what had happened to John and they were quick to talk about him and pay tribute.

They described a man known to all, who went to the same places every day. He was a well-known face in the city centre.

So while it was a day full of sadness, the community spirit shone through in all of those who spoke to us.

John is being fondly remembered. Flowers were quickly placed at Ladbrokes in his memory.

It is a tragedy this innocent man was caught up in a police chase but the reaction of residents is surely testament to the great spirit we have here.

In a city with so many people passing each other by every day, it is good to know people are thinking of John with such fondness.

We are sure that everybody here will continue to pull together to support each other and our thoughts are with John’s family.
