Why are sentences in this country so lenient for animal cruelty?
Following my comments in your story about the Littlehampton woman who stamped on a duck’s head and neck and killed it (The Argus, November 7), incurring a five-year ban on keeping animals but no prison sentence or fine, I read about a cruelty case in the US.
A man was arrested on 11 counts of animal cruelty to a dog in Connecticut and risks a five-year sentence on each count (The Boston Globe, October 29).
Even though consecutive sentences are rare, this makes our maximum of six months altogether, no matter what, look rather like a sick joke, doesn’t it?
