I am writing in reply to Adam Trimingham’s piece in Wednesday’s edition of the Argus (April 9). I read the piece through twice and Adam is right.

The local council has got to save the Madeira Terrace – it is an iconic part of “old Brighton”.

The problem for the council is where to get the money from and, although I am sure it knew the terrace was in a poor state, it should have thought long and hard about the money.

Maybe if it hadn’t given the go-ahead to the i360 viewing tower on the seafront (which I am guessing not many locals really want) some money could have been used from that.

What the council seems to do with various parts of Brighton and Hove’s history is wait until the costs have become so large that it just says it cannot afford it. And so the item is lost.

Look at the West Pier; I am sure it could have been saved. That really was a genteel and beautiful pier.

Now, if the repairs to the Madeira Terrace are left too long then that will go the same way as the West Pier and therefore lost forever.

In addition, perhaps the council can look towards Black Rock, a really scruffy part of Brighton nowadays.

Please build some entertainment centre there – something to smarten up this area but entertainment the city can be proud of.

Firstly, restore an ice rink. Let’s have Brighton Tigers filling the pages of The Argus once more. There is an ice rink on the Isle of Wight and a large number of local people go there almost weekly to watch ice hockey.

Next, we need a good dance hall. The old town used to have many places where people could go and enjoy dancing.

Perhaps we could entice Strictly to come down. That would be more good publicity for the city. It would be good to compete with Blackpool – I am sure Brighton could show them.

C’mon council, please get on with the repairs and then start building. Let’s put the city back on the map once again.
