I was intrigued to read that “the mere presence of an encampment without any aggravating factors should not normally create an expectation that Sussex Police will use eviction powers” according to Grenville Wilson, a superintendent for Sussex Police (Letters, April 15).

I am glad that a “lawful, balanced proportionate and consistent approach” is advocated because if I have interpreted this properly then surely it means that when we drive into town we can just park up on Victoria Gardens lawns, thus saving a packet in parking fees.

If parking with impunity is OK for travellers, it must be OK for the rest of us.
