Caroline Lucas’s housing charter (The Argus, July 15) drawn up from stories of difficulties people have faced trying to find a home in Brighton is over a year too late.

The Home Sweet Home Community Campaign in the City begun the process in 2013 and has not only heard from residents but is well under the way of creating a set of solutions.

We have been praised in the House of Lords and this month met with Shadow Housing Minister, Emma Reynolds, to discuss how to implement extended contracts for tenants, abolishing letting agents’ fees and restricting hikes in rent.

The team has also been working with the council and has launched a Tenants Guide as well as a revamp of the council’s website to make getting help easier.

Finally, Labour have been listening to the Home Sweet Home Team to help create a fairer housing policy if they win the council next year.

This included a licensing scheme on landlords. All evidence suggests that such a scheme will improve the quality of rental proprieties and make the industry more professional.

It’s great to see other groups now waking up to the housing problems in the city but it should be remembered that Caroline Lucas is not the only person offering solutions and that she is not always ahead of the game.
