I participate regularly in Hollingdean waste and recycling project mentioned recently by Cllr Pete West.

While there is interest in reducing our waste, there are some areas where the group could do with more help from the council if we are to make a real difference.

It has turned out not to be possible to get any data on recycling rates.

Part of the reason seems to be that the priority is being given to the broader recycling incentive scheme being launched this summer, leaving staff with little time to help with the neighbourhood project.

An incentive for recycling would work better on a local basis if people knew that more recycling in their street might free up money to make improvements to the local park, for example.

Community composting makes sense and I hope we will make more progress. But it’s also important to get the basic facilities right.

Only one in ten of Hollingdean’s council-owned blocks have the full recycling facilities, namely correctly labelled glass and mixed recycling.

While some of this is being addressed, progress is frustratingly slow. Since the Hollingdean project has been mentioned by Cllr West, perhaps he would like to suggest as to how more support can be given.
