Thanks for telling us about big salaries paid to council bosses (The Argus, August 6).

At a time when many face desperate poverty – even those in jobs – we have to tackle the huge inequality between people at the top of the economic pile and those at the bottom.

Let’s give credit to Brighton & Hove’s Green administration and its chief executive for taking a first step in this direction, by agreeing to cut her pay below the going rate whilst their lowest-paid workers now get the living wage.

But I see your salary figures are supplied by the so-called Taxpayers Alliance, a right-wing group funded by rich donors allied to the Conservative Party.

In my opinion this group’s agenda is to persuade us that public spending is a waste of money, so we shan’t complain when the Government starves our services of money and hands them over to its private sector buddies to run for profit. It’s all about saying ‘public bad, private good’.

So the comparison we need is between bosses’ pay in councils and in private firms which the ‘Taxpayers Alliance’ says are so efficient.

The truth is, many private sector chief executives would not get out of bed for the salaries you’ve cited. And let’s not kid ourselves that they’re ‘not spending our money’. What funds their colossal pay packets?

Ultimately, the money they squeeze out of employees and consumers – in other words, us the public.

Could you now investigate top managers’ pay in some major private employers in Brighton & Hove – their whole package , salary plus bonuses and share deals?

Transparency is a great thing, so let’s apply it to all the bosses.
