Further to the letter from Doug Coupe ‘Pride is just about money’ (The Argus August 6), I attended Preston Park for this year’s Pride Party in the Park.

I noticed that whilst it was comfortable to move around, it seemed to me numbers in the park were considerably down on last year.

However, from my observations, most if not all of the outlets selling refreshments didn’t seem to be doing very much business at all.

The policy now is that you are not allowed to bring your own food and drink into the park, but the exorbitant prices being charged by traders selling food seemed to have discouraged most from making purchases.

I noticed several ice cream vans dotted around the park, and at each I observed the two staff in the vans just leaning out looking for customers.

I am sure the concession charges for these traders by Pride must be high, but punters were deterred from making any purchases.

Surely lower prices and a higher turnover would have given these traders a far better reward in profits.

Yes, the tents selling alcohol seemed to be doing more reasonable business, but otherwise I think most traders were being rather greedy to say the least, and this year I reckon, from what I personally witnessed, it seemed to have backfired on them.

Perhaps these traders should take a leaf out of how Primark and the pound shops operate, as they are always very busy, and be content with a very small profit but a huge turnover.
