In his letter, Mr AB Chapman claims that the British supported the establishment of a Jewish Israel but reneged on a state for Arabs.

Nothing could be further from historical fact.

The United Nations resolved that there should be states for both. Maps are easily available to show the areas apportioned to be a Jewish state and the similar areas to be an Arab Palestinian state.

The British mandate ended on May 14, 1948, and Ben Gurion declared the beginning of the state of Israel.

On May 15, 1948, Israel was attacked by a combination of armies of Egypt, Iraq, Syria and Jordan, which were joined by contingents from Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Morocco and the Yemen.

It’s all there in the history books – look it up.

You could say the Arab offensive was disproportionate, but of course that term only applies to Israel defending itself.

Perhaps the doubters will begin to see now why Israel cannot wait for world opinion (whatever that is) to support its self-defence.

The Arab states have lost half a dozen major conflicts but they are all still there (albeit causing non-stop wars among themselves).

Israel has to lose but one conflict and that would be the end of it.

I hope, but very much doubt, that the Western world would like the situation that would follow such a loss, especially when ISIS and Co turn up on your doorstep and, for example, start tearing down the local churches.
