I AM writing this letter in the hope that some of the teachers who work with the foreign students can teach some of them manners towards the people who live here.

I have spoken to many people who have agreed with me. When waiting for a bus, they all just charge on and push past everyone else. It does not matter whether we are elderly or middle-aged, not forgetting mothers with prams and small children.

They obviously are not aware of the words ‘sorry’, ‘thank you’, ‘respect’... these words need to be explained to them.

I actually asked them to wait until we got on first, as some of us had been waiting quite a while, so I thought it was only polite.

They looked at me totally blank of what I was saying. However, as soon as they got on board they look at you, shout at each other in their native tongue then promptly start talking quite easily in our language. We are well aware they know exactly what we are saying.

When these students are being taught the rudiments of English language, could they also be taught respect and manners?

I will add that a percentage of the students, that are in the minority, can be polite and helpful so possibly we can look forward to some nice, friendly students with a large proportion of respect to all those around them.

I hope that this letter has a good effect. I wait to see if the students improve over time.
