I would like to clarify the process for introducing new residents’ parking schemes (Council looks at new parking zones, Argus October 6).

For many years this council’s policy has been to provide residents with the parking schemes they want to see in their areas.

Any requests for new schemes are subject to full consultation. We acknowledge the long-term problems in the areas mentioned in the citywide parking review and a decision on whether to proceed with consultation on these will be made in the summer of 2015.

The areas highlighted by your report are ones where the council has had the most requests to look at potential residents’ parking schemes.

If it is decided to consult and the results show that a majority of residents do not want a parking scheme, then we will not go ahead.

At its meeting on October 7 the environment committee agreed to proceed with residents’ parking schemes at Bakers Bottom, where 77.8% of people who responded to consultation were in favour and Lewes Road Triangle where 61% were in favour.

Councillors also agreed to go ahead with designing a new parking zone in the Wish Park area of Hove where many residents have been calling for controls for years and in the recent consultation 75% of respondents said they would like a scheme.

We always work hard to tailor resident’s parking schemes to the needs of the neighbourhoods, so in Wish Park we are looking to add the new roads to the neighbouring ‘light touch’ scheme which most of people said they wanted.

Once designed, residents will have a further opportunity to comment on the detailed proposals.
