All too easily we are losing valuable parts of our cultural heritage in the name of progress.

Brighton is full of shops, restaurants and it has two cinemas of its own.

The ABC cinema in Ship Street, Brighton, is now a Chinese buffet restaurant.

The town couldn’t support three cinemas then. What makes you think it can now? The cinema complex at the Marina is within travelling distance of the town and easily accessible to drivers and non-drivers alike. Brighton does not need another one.

What Brighton does need is another venue for live performance.

And guess what? We have one already, sitting there waiting for the care and consideration it deserves.

Musical productions, plays, comedy, live bands could and should all be housed in the beautiful venue.

This venue would complement Brighton and its already well established entertainment industry.

We should be conserving the things we still have left from yesteryear and not taking them away from people who want to enjoy them.

It is our duty to conserve our historical buildings and turning this site into a cinema/shopping/restaurant facility would be both shameful and inexcusable.

I implore the council to act in the best interests of our city and save Brighton’s Hippodrome.
