I have been living in Grand Parade for four years since 2010. I have seen a lot of constructive changes made by the council on zone C parking area over the past few years which is really much appreciated. However, I would like to raise a concern that there are not enough parking spaces for the zone C permit holders in the area near Grand Parade, especially William Street as well as John Street.

I work in Eastbourne and usually get back to Brighton from work at around 6pm. I have to say I cannot find a single parking space for permit holder C near William Street and John Street, even Dorset Street opposite the road.

This is because there are only four permit holder spaces in William Street, five spaces for Dorset Street and three spaces (max. four for small cars) for John Street, on top of the constant construction works which make the parking bays near the American Express building not available all the time.

The situation is even worse on Thursday and Friday where the parking is always full in Circus Street even the whole street is also available to permit holders.

As a matter of fact, I am writing to see if there is any chance the Brighton and Hove City Council could release more shared bays for permit holders rather than set aside for ‘pay and display’ only (a good example would be the later half of the William Street which can accommodate around 15 cars).

I see no harm releasing more shared bays between permit holders and visitors because there is a big Carlton Hill car park which can be used as pay and display parking but is rarely used by visitors, even in the weekends.

I feel frustrated after a long day of work when I see there are spaces in William Street but I cannot park until 8pm because it is for pay and display only.

I also feel frustrated when I always struggle to find a parking space near my flat every day so I have to drive around William Street, John Street, Dorset Street, Circus Street, George Street, etc which costs extra fuel and time.

The worst scenario is that I have once parked at the Upper Rock Gardens because all the permit holder spaces were occupied .

I believe this is quite absurd especially if I have to pay £115 a year to renew my resident permit, yet I cannot park anywhere near my home. I believe my suggestion can gain support from other people who live near Grand Parade, particularly if the supply of parking spaces for permit holders cannot be met.
