Oh what a lovely mess we’ve got in to – or should I say into.

The Lanes becomes Laines. North Laine becomes Brighton Laines. Kemp Town becomes Kemptown. I’ve not much hair left after tearing most of it out.

Lethargy in the use of language, tardiness in communication and ineptitude from people who should know better has lead to mass confusion.

Don’t get me started on The Rookery which has become plain old Rock Garden, diluting its unique heritage – and that came from the council.

However, maybe we need to accept that this is how language evolves.

Brighthelmstone was probably born out of hard of hearing people telling each other what a lovely time they’d had in Brighton.

Its next incarnation could be being advertised as ‘the beautiful seaside resort of Brian’. It could happen.

Predictive text will probably have the most destructive affect on the changing landscape of names as our grandchildren will by visiting Rita Paving built by Prince Regent with its magnificent domes.
