It’s not before time that Brighton and Hove City Council have concluded that Margaret Thatchers iniquitous ‘right to buy’ scheme should be discontinued in the City (The Argus, December 13).
While it may have helped the more fortunate to buy council homes at a knockdown price it has since inception depleted local council housing stock by 6,000 homes with more than 1,000 sold on to property investors for rental income.
While councils retain about 30% of the money raised from initial sales of housing stock that hasn’t over the years been reflected in the building of new homes to replace those sold off, which has further swelled the ever growing waiting list for council houses.
It is no wonder that with an increase in the level of discount in 2012, there was a four-fold increase in right-to-buy applications in the city.
The whole ethos of providing council houses for those on moderate incomes has sadly been lost in political dogma and has further been exacerbated with uncontrolled and unsustainable levels of immigration.
