Many people will have noticed the work going on which aims to improve transport in the vicinity of Brighton Railway Station.
Some of this work is probably an improvement on what was there before but some parts of the scheme appear to be daft.
One of the sillier elements seems to be the decision to create a contraflow cycle lane along part of Queen’s Road leading to the station whilst removing the bus lane and stop previously located there.
This appears to have made things more difficult for bus users and created more congestion.
There used to be a decent bus stop with a shelter, seating and an electronic timetable board.
This has been replaced with an inadequate stop without a shelter, seating or easy view of the timetable in Queen’s Road.
In addition there are now problems with congestion in Surrey Street caused by the bizarre decision to narrow the road space, which may also cause some displacement of traffic elsewhere.
The size of some of the trees due to be planted on the pavement also needs to be looked at because these could cause problems.
The improvements to the pedestrian route along the Eastern side of Queen’s Road are to be welcomed but some of the other changes being made during stage four of the scheme need to be reviewed because they make things more difficult for many pedestrians, bus users and drivers of essential vehicles.
