I was pleased to read Mr Cameron’s comments on his visit to Hove, which insulted young people, the council, its staff, and just about everyone else.

In The Argus reporting, he referred to the ‘well-worn path’ from school to a life on benefits, and proposed to introduce a work or no benefits regime.

He did not mention that his policies have created record numbers of youth unemployment.

All young people want to work – but not in low skill, zero hours contracts – they want permanent, full-time, stimulating jobs.

Mr Cameron’s idea is not only the equivalent of slave labour, but it will contribute to a continuing race to the bottom of pay and terms and conditions.

It is not a ‘half-baked’ idea, but part of the Government’s agenda to destroy the welfare state, and anything else that gets in the way like those pesky trade unions.

To obtain these decent jobs, this city needs a growing economy, not £100million of cuts to the council budget, but investment across all sectors to create employment.

His attacks on all these groups need to be seen for what they are – a divide and rule, targeted at those in and out of work, those who are young and older, and those in the public and private sectors.

Brighton and Hove’s people are a unique lot and we will not fall into Mr Cameron’s trap.

To coin his own Government’s statement in 2010 – ‘We are all in it together’, so, Mr Cameron, sort out your billionaire friends who stuff money into Swiss bank accounts and avoid tax.

That will solve the deficit, and pay for a job for all our young people. Now, that is a plan!
