I am intrigued by the latest articles regarding the i360 project, (The Argus March 2).

I have never been a fan of this project as I am concerned about the lack of control the council has over it despite the massive investment by council tax payers.

Putting my reservations aside I now get the impression we were hoodwinked, a little, about the benefits of the project.

As I understand it, the i360 promises financial benefits of £1 million to the council, and £25 million to the economy each year.

Depending on your opinion, these prospective gains may or may not be considered worth the risk the council is taking.

However, we now learn that these benefits are dependent on the Brighton Wheel being dumped and so need to be offset against the benefits the wheel already brings.

These figures are theoretical but at £12.6 million and £1 million respectively I make it that the net benefits of the i360 are projected to be £12.4 million to the wider economy and zero for the council.

Considering the matter in that context, I feel all the more uneasy about this undertaking.

It’s no wonder the Green MP for Brighton Pavilion, Caroline Lucas, is so keen to distance herself from her council colleagues!
