On reading the article about Sarah Lewis and the Mazda fountain, it brought back memories.
In the late 30s I was allowed to walk from Queen’s Park Road down Carlton Hill and wait on the black and white steps next to Champions, to wait for my father to finish work at the baker’s shop in Gardener Street.
I was about seven, and not allowed to cross the road. But in those days, us kids could go around safely.
Of course the real reason I went was to see the fantastic coloured water fountain working. I was born in Brighton and would love to see it working all the time.
