I read with great interest the article in the Argus (March 23) Residents clean up the city.

It’s brilliant that a team of residents and council workers got together to clear discarded litter. One thing that has struck my husband and myself when we’re out and about in our car, is the filthy state of the roadsides in parts of Sussex.

We’ve driven along the A23 on quite a few occasions, and feel disgusted by the amount of discarded litter on the roadsides, before and after the area was recently updated into three lanes. Almost every main road we drive along is very similar.

As my husband often says: ‘We’re turning into a third world country’. The majority of this rubbish must come from being thrown from vehicles, or just allowed to drift out of windows.

I would guess only a small amount comes from larger vehicles such as open topped lorries. Just how do we tackle this. It’s not just someone else’s problem. I wonder if anyone has any ideas.
