I wish to respond to the letter from PJ Wisdom headed Good Riddance to it (Argus, March 25).

I have to thank him/her for responding to my letter. There is nothing I enjoy more than a good discussion.

I don't like rows or confrontations but a good discussion – that’s different.

In life you have to respect somebody else’s point of view and I certainly respect PJ’s view.

In his/her letter he mentions good points in Brighton under the leadership of the Green Party and mentions the Seven Dials.

I concede that it is a little easier to negotiate around this area, but they did take a long time doing it.

However, he also mentions the gyratory system in Lewes Road. This is something I cannot agree about.

Luckily I rarely have to go that way, but it is still a nightmare with vehicles coming from all directions. (Perhaps people who use this regularly may make a comment whether or not it is better now.)

The main reason the Mazda Fountain hardly ever works is that it hasn’t been properly maintained for many years.

It does probably need some new and up-to-date parts. Then it will always be working.

He mentions that the fountain resembles an EWS tank from the Second World War. I suppose in a way it does but I can hardly see what that has to do with it.

Now, this is the part where PJ has got it wrong.

Nowhere did I mention the Conservative Party not being voted by the students.

My grandson is a university student, not in Brighton, and I still stand by my words.

Students shouldn’t vote where their university is situated. They can get a postal vote and vote in their home towns.

They are obviously residents for the duration of their course, but then they return to the home areas.

Of course PJ failed to mention the huge amount of money spent on cycle lanes, which hardly anyone uses throughout the day apart from a while in the mornings and late afternoons.

The only cycle lane regularly used is the one on the seafront which it shares with a pavement, one of the most dangerous cycle lanes I would dare to mention in the whole country.

I always thought cycle lanes were on the roads not pavements.

One day, if there hasn’t already been, a serious accident will happen when cyclists and pedestrians are mixed together.

So I stand by my thoughts. Get the Greens out before they do any more damage to the city.
