The media like nothing more than jumping on the comments of politicians and we are all aware that many reporters dream up questions designed to trap them.

Shouldn’t reporters conduct uncomplicated interviews aimed at eliciting interesting and honest facts rather than trying to show us how clever they are?

David Cameron was asked: If you remain prime minister after the election, would you go for a third term?

The first part of the question is important in that there was nothing pretentious in commenting on a third term.

As to his reply, in a relaxed session within his home involving his wife, what was wrong in being honest and saying no?

Thereafter – when pressed concerning a successor – isn’t it likely that he would mention a few names off the top of his head and to suggest that this would open up a succession race is nonsense.

All organisations that rely on succession in management identify potential successors in advance for a variety of reasons, among them the fact that existing incumbents may drop dead.
